Why you should backup your company’s data?

We live in a society where data is becoming increasingly important. Companies’ data are an asset that allows them to know their past in order to face their future. Having tools to manage business data allows us to make better decisions. But what happens if we lose our company’s data or fall victim to a cyber attack?

Many companies are not carrying clear policies and protocols about the company’s IT security. One of the principles that should always prevail is the need to prevent before curing.

What is a backup and why do you need it

A back up is a backup of one or more files that can be stored on a device external to your own computer. This backup can be restored whenever you need it and you will have your company’s data back to the point where you left it.

Imagine you have a lot of information about your business, such as invoices, contracts, documents, etc. If all this is only stored on your main business computer and you don’t have backup copies, if a virus gets into that computer and affects those files you will lose a lot of useful information.

A backup is therefore a backup that will allow you not to lose information. Although it is not the only computer security measure you should take, it is a necessity in today’s SMEs.

How to make backups

The backups must be periodic, because we never know at what moment we can lose the data. Think that if, for example, your last backup is from a year ago, everything that has been deleted and that you did during the last year, you will have no way to recover it.

The problem here is that if the backups keep growing and growing, eventually we run out of space to store them. That is why it is highly recommended that newer backups replace older backups. This way, backups will not take up space in your cloud storage.

In addition, another important point can be that your backups are encrypted. In this way, even if someone manages to access these files from outside the company, if they do not have the key to decrypt them, they will not be able to know their content. Along these lines, it is highly recommended that you can make encrypted backups of your company’s data.

Is it safe to make a backup in the cloud?

Many people have their suspicions about the cloud. But it is often due to a lack of knowledge of how it works. The truth is that many of the actions we perform in day-to-day business can be much more insecure than the cloud. In fact, inserting a USB stick that has been in another previously unknown computer already has a much higher risk than the cloud.

The cloud just comes to mean that your data is stored in a fragmented way in many different places. When you need it, you can see it as it is, but it’s not all in one place. That’s the great advantage of keeping your data safe and preventing any kind of risk.

Backing up to the cloud is much safer than using physical external storage devices, such as CDs, DVDs, USB sticks, etc. This type of device, which can be easily lost or broken, is not the most suitable tool for storing your SMB’s data.

How do I make cloud copies of my SMB’s data?

Your company just needs to decide what data it wants to store. Many times we do not want to backup all our data, but we do want to backup our database, with our inventory, our customer list, or any other information that we consider sensitive or very relevant.
